KMG recognizes its responsibility to society and the environment and is making every effort to ensure the efficient use of water resources. In 2018 at an HSE forum for CEOs of KMG Group companies, we signed a Statement of Commitment to efficient water management (Eight water-related principles). The Standard sets out Company’s key water use principles, systematizes the approach to their management by KMG’s subsidiaries and associated companies, and helps increase the commitment of the Company’s managers and employees to saving fresh water.
Projects are being implemented aimed at reducing discharges and reducing water intake from natural sources. In 2020, the CDP reports have been expanded and in 2023 the water management data was published on the CDP website as part of the Water Security Questionnaire 2022. For more information, refer to the published KMG reports available at: CDP Water Security Questionnaire.
The total water intake of the KMG Group in 2022 was 83.71 million m3 including surface sources - 36.76 million m3, underground sources - 19,51 million m3, urban water supply systems - 9.7715 million m3, sea - 17.58 million m3, wastewater from other enterprises - 0.09 million m3.
The specific coefficient of water consumption in the «Oil production» line in 2022 was 2.05 m3 of water per 1 thousand tons of oil produced; The specific water consumption coefficient in the «Oil Refining» line in 2022 was 0.89 m3 of water per 1 thousand tons of processed oil.
In 2022, the KMG Group discharged 10.69 mln m3 of wastewater. After wastewater treatment in treatment facilities,
the water treated to standard quality is discharged to specialized facilities: collection ponds, evaporation fields,
and filtration fields. The enterprises that have no own storage facilities transfer wastewater to specialized
companies for treatment and discharge under the signed contracts. After treatment, wastewater is reused for vehicle
washing, dust suppression, and fire-fighting systems. At this, a significant volume of the treated wastewater is
recycled at the refineries only where in 2022 4.33 mln m3 of treated wastewater was recycled. Such water is mostly
used for makeup of circulating water supply units. The percentage of water recycling at the KMG plants was 27%
(from the total water intake in the Oil Refining area). In total, the recycling water systems of the KMG refineries
used (recirculated) 451.27 mln m3 of water. Oil production generates large volumes of so-called produced associated
water: water-oil emulsion is drawn to the surface, which is then separated into water and oil by gravity. After
settling in this manner, water is injected to the reservoir.
In total, of 136.52 million m3 of associated reservoir water produced in 2022, 99% was re-injected to maintain reservoir pressure.
